Sylvia Metzer is a senior systemic family psychotherapist working as a systemic supervisor, trainer and clinician at the NHS Prudence Skynner family therapy service based at Springfield Hospital in Tooting. Sylvia has been part of the IFT teaching staff for a number of years, where she has been a senior tutor on the year 1 graduate certificate programme at IFT and currently provides systemic supervision to postgraduate diploma and MSc students. She has also run various systemic programmes for social workers and their managers, including with Medway and Essex city councils on behalf of IFT. Sylvia also works at the Priory Hospital in Roehampton and runs a private practice, where she provides both systemic supervision and works with client families primarily with eating disorders, anxiety and self-harm issues. Prior to her current roles, Sylvia worked for a number of years in the eating disorders service at Springfield Hospital and 9 years in the NHS Child & Adolescent CAMHS service in Newham, where she supported a number of social care teams systemically and run a systemic supervision group for various frontline managers. Sylvia has a background as an organisational psychologist, for over 20 years providing organisational coaching, leadership training and facilitation. She has a particular interest in promoting the application of systemic ideas and theories to a variety of different statutory and organisational contexts. She also runs the foundation and intermediate training courses for the Prudence Skynner clinic. Sylvia is a member of the ethics committee for the Association of Family Therapy (AFT) and regularly writes and presents on behalf of the profession at conferences and in various systemic journals.
