Difficulties in Intimate Relationships

There is no map to navigate the storms which can develop in our most intimate attachments. Working with a therapist trained in dealing with intimate relationships can help with mutual understanding, better communication, better intimacy and to healing attachment wounds.

We facilitate conversations that help those in intimate relationships to unpick and look closely at the complexities of communication, interaction and understanding between significant others.

Our therapeutic work addresses the impact of the past, present and future, as well as the impact of wider social ideas/beliefs and issues, on intimate relationships. We recognise that couples may have started their journey together with a set of shared expectations of the future. As life changes, challenges to the expectations we hold may occur.

These may include:

  • Becoming parents
  • Fertility issues
  • Infidelity
  • Bereavement
  • Redundancy
  • Illness
  • Psycho-sexual issues

We may be forced to confront our cultural differences and belief systems, renegotiating relationship boundaries as circumstances change. We might also want to reflect on how power plays out in adult relationships as well as the significance of issues like gender/gender identity, ethnicity, class/economics, sexuality, and religion/spirituality on how we relate to each other. Our therapeutic approach provides a forum in which these issues can be safely explored. therapeutic approach provides a forum in which these issues can be safely explored.
